Technician I - Plant Breeding and Genetics

About SIPS: The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty, ~200 undergraduate majors, 200+ graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The School offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.

Position Summary

Play an active role in the maintenance of all aspects of a potato breeding program. Participate in the preparation and execution of each task that is needed for the advancement of the project, including (but not limited to); planting/observing/harvesting field plots, evaluating harvested potatoes for a variety of different characteristics, planting and working with a winter crossing generation in the greenhouse, occasionally assist in any lab-based projects.

Assists in identifying problem areas and acts to resolve them.

Occasionally provides and receives data and other information to/from research collaborators within and outside of the university.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion , and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • High school diploma and up to 1-year relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS Driver's license and be cleared to drive for University business.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all conditions.
  • Ability to routinely lift 25 lbs.
  • Work with a high level of attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Office suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Forklift operation safety certificate or ability to obtain one
  • Previous experience in an agricultural field
