Position Overview

The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Military Community Relations Specialist located in Springfield, IL. This position is under direct supervision of the Director of Public Affairs, responsible for the supervision and coordination of the information program activities of the Department of Military Affairs and the Illinois National Guard. The Department of Military Affairs works with the members of the Illinois Air and Army National Guard. We welcome all interested applicants to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Acts as Project Manager for community relations activities of Illinois National Guard units.
  • Prepares material for the internal information program designed to inform and motivate the Illinois National Guard to perform to the most of their capability.
  • Prepares and distributes information concerning the Illinois National Guard and its activities through news articles, feature stories, radio and television interviews, and briefing and presentations.
  • Conducts research support applicable to ILNG PA policies, regulations and products, gathering information and coordinating with other directorates and agencies.
  • Provides technical assistance related to office automation, record-keeping, JFHQ-PA surveys, office inventory and supplies, and office support methodologies.
  • Coordinates and provides photographic support for events and activities of the Illinois National Guard.
  • Serves as the Acting Public Affairs Director in the absence of the Director and Deputy Director of Public Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years college with course work in journalism, photography, business management, English or public speaking. 
  • Ability to conduct journalistic research, analysis of data, and to evaluate and correlate source materials.
  • The position requires applicable knowledge of Microsoft Office, publication layout and editing software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers a thorough working knowledge of the National Guard, its structure, and its mission.
  • Prefers the ability to maintain satisfactory working relationship with agency officials, employees and outside groups .
  • Prefers the ability to work with others to accomplish a goal such as directing a project involving peers.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires active or retired (20 years) membership in the Illinois National Guard or retired (minimum 20 years) US Armed forces, if last duty assignment was with the Illinois National Guard. 
  • Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.
  • Requires physical activities such as lifting, bending and other routine exercises, as needed.
  • Requires the possession of a valid driver’s license.
